Almost like a dream! Almost...

Postby Ads22 » Thu Feb 09, 2017 7:28 pm

Didn't get a chance to get out in the kayak yesterday (won't take my son on the Fitzroy here) but hooked a ripper fish landbased on first cast into creek mouth. After a minute or two the hooks pulled. Spewing!

Today I ducked down there again on outgoing tide for 20 minutes on my lunch break (rare as they are) and 4 or 5 casts in line took off. Peeled a stack of line, racing both ways. Pulled me through a forked tree and I slowly worked it back to the fork. Thought I was onto one of my dream captures, even though landbased, a lunch break barra! Took about 5 minutes, and some help from a nearby boat to net it for me at the tree. Saw a forked tail, so had to be a threadfin, surely. Boaties called barra when they saw the silver sides. Only when they netted it did we all realise it was a 60cm+ mullet, gut hooked. How unfortunate, but cool at the same time. My lunch break barra still eludes me. But perhaps not for long!

Used it as recon for a potential trip on the river on Saturday. Hopefully time permits and I can nab on in the yak then!

Cheers,

One step closer to a lunch break barra today. Water still very dirty in town and only getting fish on live bait, but hooked a little fella on a lunker sp today only for him to drop off after about 20 sec. Had a hit at my feet that missed hooks, too. Scared the daylights outta me!

Lunch time barra coming soon, I hope.

I proved to myself that the barra are around (my auto correct changed 'around' to 'stupid', perhaps this one was! ). First time fishing the Fitzroy River in town with live bait, landed a 94cm.

Can't wait for it to clear up (looks like roadhouse coffee) so I can get out on the yak and get some on lures. And maybe I have to swing by home Monday lunchtime to get some livies for my lunchtime barra.

Non-yak warning.

It's not quite a lunchtime Barra, but I was on call so I guess technically still working. Live bait works. Fitzroy is either fishing well or I've been lucky.

Looks like it now that I check it JD. Must be a bad angle and some loose scales. This might be better...

I'm sure I'm creeping ever closer to an official lunch break barra. Wednesday was windy and rainy here in CQ so I didn't get the kayak out. Plus, I had to repair my rudder cable, so was waiting for some cord to arrive. Thanks to Viking Kayaks great support, it has now arrived and hopefully will be back on the water shortly. I headed out for a land based fish about midday Wednesday, lobbed out a live perch (collected from a little creek near a farm I was attending Monday) and flicked a soft vibe on another rod before switching to live bait on that, too. Third cast I pulled in a 46cm barra. 12:20pm barra almost counts as a lunch break barra, except it was my day off. I shall persist!

Caught a 47cm on live bait later in the day, then a fat catfish which came home for burgers. Tagged both little barra. Was a pretty chilly day for Rocky!

Cheers,

Adam
