Another one gone :-)

Postby millroy » Fri Aug 18, 2017 7:01 pm

Hello All,

Rotten thieves have cut chain/padlock and stolen my Hobie mirage Outback from lake shore Green Point (south Wallis Lake) on a windy stormy night.

Bespoke sail with furling ropes and pulleys and full internal wiring for Evolve electric motor with plugs front and rear.

Ivory sand colour.

Dont suppose I will ever see it again but appreciate any notice if it appears suddenly and anyone notices

Thanks everyone, I know i am not alone in losing it despite what i thought were fair precautions :-)

John

Damn! Sorry to hear that ....have you got some pics of it? We can spread the word. Let Hobie know too - did they get the fins & seat & everything?

Do you have the serial number?

Thx Roberta,
I have all the details and appreciate your input. Never thought to let Hobie know. Good idea.
One of the things i will miss most is Bill Pain's bespoke sail. He lives at Coomba Park and makes wonderful customs furlable sails. One of the pics on Bills website is of my kayak with sail.

Luckily i had the mirage drive out but everything else including pole and paddle went... Organised thieves as it has brand new strong padlock and chain to heavy metal bracket on catamaran.

Thx for bothering to reply,

John

If you have some pics we can plaster it all over social media.. hundred of yakkers can then keep an eye out for it. Especially in the for sale pages.

Cheers,

OK .... so what colour is your yak? He has numerous Outbacks on the site - blue, yellow & the standard grey

Have you reported it to the police? If anyone sees it - should they contact you and/or the police?

So this one?

I've also added the info & pics to The Great Lakes Advocate FB Page and Manning River Times FB Page ... fingers crossed, the more eyes that see it - the better chance of recovering it.

cheers

Thanks so much team for helping. I am a bit taken aback by your generosity :). Have reported to police.
Contacting Hobie as they replaced the original hull under warranty as was waiting until I checked serial no etc..

Looks like oneself in pics you found but has clear sail with blue trimmings.

Will attempt now to upload a few actual photos.

Many thanks all

John

Hi was there anything out of the ordinary happening around the area ?
Having also had mine thieved about a year back Im of the opinion it was most likely a work crew who had spotted them and came back for them.
I dont imagine knocking of a kayak quickly and quietly is a one man job and you wouldnt hang around to strap it on roof racks ,good size trailer or truck Id reckon.(I lost 2 when they hit me)
let me know if you think of anything as id be very interested to know.
Good luck hope it shows up.
Cheers Pat

Thanks Pat for your thoughts. Nothing special observed. Smacks of well planned organised theft.
Moonless and windy, noisy night. Chain and padlock gone. Would have needed 2 men to carry along shoreline to access road nearby (no lighting). I have little hope of getting it back but the whole incident will hopefully lead to more police patrols and local awareness. Not the sort of awareness unfortunately that adds to the joy of lakeside living and reveling in the joys of exploring the lake on Kayak.

Hobie have confirmed my hull serial no:

Outback Ivory Dune, HCCT8138I213.

Thanks and best wishes,

John

Millroy and paperboy I will keep an eye out in the coffs Area but I also recommend reminding forum members regularly of your misfortune to keep vigilance up with regards to spotting your yaks .
Old farts like me will see a lot of yaks but forget to keep an eye out for specific models . I believe they will sit on them for a while and sell after a couple of years of paddling as they would not get a new pedal drive without causing suspicion .

Agree, and now I have a "spare" V1 drive. Would it be worth anything much? Maybe the thieves would like to buy it from me ?? :?:
