More South Coast Kings

So who's been offshore recently? How did you go?

More South Coast Kings

After catching a few kings early in the week, it wasn't a hard decision to head out to Currarong again today for another look. To my relief the good water was still there, with plenty of garfish skipping away from the kayak as I paddled out at first light. It took me about an hour to catch two live baits and about 15 minutes to turn one into a solid hookup, line peeling off my 30lb setup (TLD 25 / 10-15kg ugly stick). After a few good runs I could see the fish and gaffed it on the second attempt. I still had the fish / gaff / trace on my lap when the other line went off , I very nearly went for a swim as the kayak leant over so far the rod tip was nearly in the water  Note to self back the drag off on the other rod once one hooks up!! Once I regained my balance it didn't take me long to wind in the other one and seeing it was well hooked yanked it aboard by the trace.

With two fish being plenty I headed into lobster bay to sort out the mess of leashes, traces and fish and a spearfisherman was kind enough to take a few photos for me, in exchange for some advice on where to find them. I was back home by a surprisingly early 10am.

Both fish measured 68cm.

Good one mate re your comment " Note to self back the drag off on the other rod once one hooks up!! " I tend to go for as little drag as possible on my ski,s set hook once rod is in hands & feet over sides find with heavy drag too hard to lift rod out of holder.Nice to get quota early & be back for opening time :egrin:

I like to make the kingies earn every inch of line, and not giving them a head start towards the reef :beye:

Nice work Muzza. I've landed a few rats this summer but nothing legal.

Thanks guys. Yeh Jamie it’s nice to find legal fish, and not plagues of undersized ones mixed with the odd unstoppable beast like previous seasons. Using yellowtail this season instead of live pike and soft plastics I tended to use previously may be helping too.
