Arra Spaniard

#1 Post by rlenno » Sun Jan 21, 2018 12:32 pm

Launched at the crack of dawn this morning with a few of the usual suspects. Bit of wind and chop around, whilst jigging up bait had a yakka get smashed on its way up so looked like a promising start. Put out a live yakka and it was gobbled shortly after but it missed the hooks. Put another one out and start to head further out. Paddled around for another hour or so with no action, so headed back in to homegrounds for another troll through there. Couldnt find any takers, then saw on the horizon a huge school of birds feeding, and some of the other yakkers out there with them, so picked up the pace and started paddling towards them. A minute later get a big knock on the rod, pick it up, couple of winds and off it goes, reel screaming with a huge run. After a bit of give and take had a nice spanish yak side, gaffed and in the hatch. Measured 128cm and 12kg. :gu:

Great Spanish mate, I tried for another or so but not a touch on either my live yakka or dead slimey.

Well done

Solid mate!
PBs
I caught a cobia which could eat the rest except for the mackerel which could also probably eat a lot of the things

Awesome catch reinno. It was a tough morning on the water and persistence payed off for you.
What a top Spanish to start the season off with.

Drove up to SWR on Friday night, fished Saturday morning - no touches. Water green and 23.8 deg.
Drove up to Coffs Sat afternoon and fish Arrawarra Sunday morning. Water green and up to 24.2 deg. Not one touch either....

That was my first crack at the mackerel this season so hopefully better luck with cleaner water next time!
