Bread Again! Lol!

#1 Post by Freewily » Sun Sep 18, 2016 1:29 pm

Off to my local for a fishing session with my daughter & her boyfriend.
Having my kayak trailer made loading, unloading & transportation easier.
Whilst they paddled around exploring the river, I settled into a spot throwing bread around to see if any fish were interested. The bloody sea gulls were! :grr:
Then finally a few surface splashes at the bread before any more sea gulls found it.
I then set up the two young paddlers, setting their anchors so they can be close to help each other out.
We caught a few fish all on bread bait & I caught my first Flatty on bread! It measured 53cm.
Other species caught were blackfish, (Luderick), Trevally & Mullet. Biggest Blackfish by me at 47cm.
A total of 8 fish for a feed.

Great work and some surprising captures on bread especially the fatty. Is that a first or usual occurrence?
Cheers

Hi Wongus. No it's not a first time occurence catching a Flathead on bread. My daughter caught one a few years ago in the same river on bread. It measured at around 95cm at least. :lek: I posted the story on this site.
I am assuming that the flathead has attacked the fish that were nibbling at the bread & either have sucked in a hooked fish or missed the fish & sucked in the hook. In my case, I think it sucked in the hook as I found no fish in my flathead's stomach when I cleaned it.

Have seen bread out fish other baits being presented on quite a few occasions over the years, particularly if a bit of bread has been used to burley the area to attract fish.

Good variety there FW.

You should try flatbread for the flathead next time
PBs
I caught a cobia which could eat the rest except for the mackerel which could also probably eat a lot of the things

Years ago when rock hopping at Point Plomer Port Macquarie after drummer, we had an onion bag of bread hanging in the rocks and big waves occasionally sent a bread slurry in the water at our feet, while we used cabbage as bait.

After about 2 hours we saw a pink stain slowly coming in from the horizon over a sandy bottom, which eventually turned out to be a couple of hundred snapper of all sizes that followed the trail of burley into our rocks below where we fished.

Could not catch one as all our bread was slush in the onion bag, tried crabs and shellfish but all in vain.

Used the onion bag burley method many times, but only had that one experience with snapper as described.

Order fish and chips, eat the fish and use the chips for bait,, on occasions works well, particularly jetty fishing etc
Win Win, catch a fish, happy days, the chance of catching a bloody big fish, even happier days

Agree Snapperpaddy.
Any starchy foods work well. Potatoes, bread, corn, flour made into dough & rice etc. All great for burley & bait.

Hey Mate,
Just goes to show you have to expect the unexpected on the water I've used bread crumbs land based great for getting garfish on the nibble & little fish attract bigger fish .
