Surface whiting & a plastic flathead

#1 Post by Freewily » Sun Feb 17, 2019 8:20 am

I'm baaack! Sorry for the long break but was surfin until a back injury put me off that. Lol. I was hangin for a fish session since October & finally got out.
Had to travel my usual 3 kilometres or so until finding an area for some top water whiting.
Love the way they hit the Sammy lure! :lek: Ended up with 7 whiting up to 32cm.
Trolled on the way back with a plastic poddy mullet for a flatty at 42 cm.
Overall had a great day.

Looks like a meal of fresh fish is the order of the day. It appears that it was a great day out on the water. Hope you enjoy the meal as much as the fishing. Les

Thanks Les. It sure was a great day especially the calmer winds so didn't have to anchor up much unless I got onto a hot bite.
And yeah. My wife had asked for a feed of fish. So I worked hard all day for them. So didn't have time to fool around with the fly rod as I still have to master catching whiting with that.
Cheers,
Wil.

Great catch of topwater whiting! Something that I have not achieved this summer.

Thanks Ozzybass. It's more a matter of finding them. And when found you work on the type of retrieve like a skipping prawn & a continuous retrieve.
You usually can find good topwater whiting around ribbon weed patches on sand flats. But also never ignore clean sand flats. Its just a matter of fishing areas & moving on if no action.

Well done Freewily. Have only caught a few Whiting on lures and most were not targeted so am jealous of your catch. I tried for some recently with the fly rod without success. A very nice feed there with the Flathead too. That would certainly keep my wife happy. Regards Bill

Thanks Bill. Yeah. Not easy flyfishing. But I did have one time where I couldn't miss catching whiting on fly. The fly I made then had a copper wire body & tan feathers going from body to tail. There is one similar in the fly library. But I think the tail should be a bit shorter so the fish dont tail nip it.
The other thing is the retrieve. By memory what I did was cast the fly. Let it sink to bottom, do about 4 eratic quick strips, then about 4 or more longer normal to quick strips & then back to the eratic quick strips. Do this sequence all the way back in before casting again. I think this is what kept the whiting interested & to continue the chase just like the surface lures.
I used an intermediate clear fly line with either fluro or mono leader & tippet. Tippet around the 8lb breaking strain.

Thanks Allane  I finally cracked the code after being jealous of your topwater Minnamurra river whiting. Good to hear from you.

Thanks Rory222. I'm still jealous of your monster Flathead! Great post. It's all a matter of search & destroy so to speak. I have covered quite a few kilometres over the past 6 years to find the best or most likely spots. Then I just return to them on my next sessions & hope for a repeat performance.
I started out casting a good topwater lure to likely places & after about 3 to 4 casts around I would then move on a few paddles, cast & repeat until I get a follow or a strike & then I would either anchor up & or fire a few more casts for anymore interest. Then move on again.

Heyyyyyy! Good to hear from you Roberta!
No. My back wasn't good. Injured just the day before from paddleboard surfing. Over use I think from 3 hour sessions. Just can't help myself.
Look up SUP foil surfing. That's my challege at the moment. Lol. Lot of fun. Thinking someone should put a hydrofoil or two on a hobie. It'll fly!
You should have seen me hitching up the trailer to go. Had to take my double hobie off the trailer as well. Like an old man. Pain set back in just after I got out of bed. But I was determined to go! :beye:
Was painful getting in the kayak but once in I felt great. Hardly any pain & was comfortable to go. Yay! :glad:
Not too bad at the end of the session too, luckily. Was a bit worried getting off kayak & pulling it up the ramp. But all good.
Only next day getting out of bed. Pain again.
But today as I type this post. Pain is just about gone.
Anyway. Hope your review is positive.
I would love to come up but family health issues plus work are making it difficult to plan any trips.
But I am also at fault & should get my backside into gear & make an effort too. :?: :idiot:
I am planning on more fishing sessions & less surfing. Want to go offshore as well.
Cheers & have fun! :glad:
