Merimbula Pt 2 including “I Bought a New Yak!!!”

Well pleasantly surprised to see my Merimbula Pt 1 on the forum today as after I hit submit last night I got an “access is denied” message and it didn’t seem to matter what I did I couldn’t seem to get my report to post! Went to bed with the sh#%ts thinking I would have to start all over again. Fortunately it worked and there it was when I checked in today 😁😁😁.

Now on with the story.

Day 5 saw a good big tide late morning and I decided I would head to one of my most rewarding surface bream leases from years gone by. I cast my way all the way there with GG, Saemi and Sammy and didn’t get a touch. I was a little disappointed as the water just looked like I should’ve been getting hit after hit.

When I reached my destination I started tossing the Sammy around. A short while later I finally had a hit and a connection! A nice 35cm bream skull dragged across the top of the tram tracks.
It was many more casts before I eventually got another hit and hook up and landed a 28cm bream- the smallest of the trip. I cast and cast and cast but there was to be no more action in that lease or all the way home 🤔. That was until I came out of the leases into the back channel and flicked the baby GG colored up red with texta out behind me to troll the remaining way home. Before I had even closed the bail arm something big had grabbed it and took off. As the drag screamed I tightened it up but got a bit over excited and seconds later the line gave way and my likely large flatty was on her way off into the sunset with my lure 🤬🤬🤬. After such a long day with little action I was fuming to have missed my chance by overdoing the drag. I tried to remind myself that I set out to get some bream on surface and that I had achieved so it wasn’t all bad.

Day 6 saw me go shopping! I have been considering getting a yak I can take my dogs fishing on. With a 50kg Ridgeback as well a sausage dog I needed a bit of space in the back. The new 2019 Outback had sufficient space for the hounds and after a test run earlier in the week which included me getting to load it on my ute a couple of different ways I was happy I could manage it on my own. And the quality of the yak itself on the water with the reverse pedals and vantage seat was incredible. So off to Compleat Angler in Merimbula to pickup my new ride - big thanks to the the guys in there who were really helpful
Within an hour of picking it up I was heading out for the maiden voyage
With my late start on the water the tide was on the runout so I headed back out to the bottom lake to fish the channel. First blood for the new yak was a 39cm trevally which put up a fine fight
Next up was tailor and bream
As it got late in the day and low tide approached the fish started to fire. There was more bream including 2 x 42cm bluenoses one after the other. Man they are a great fight on light gear! 😁😁😁
And then came flatties and another bream...
By this stage it was getting dark and I had already been drenched by the passing showers so it was time to stop casting and make tracks for home. It was a very successful maiden voyage for the Outback. The evening was topped of nicely by the fun time I had hand feeding 2 stingrays in the shallows as I cleaned my flatties in the dark 😁.

Day 7 was a pretty cruisy day. I enjoyed a few other highlights Merimbula has to offer before taking the hounds on their maiden voyage in the Outback. No real fishing today just a bit of a test run and I think we all passed because we made it back without going in the drink or getting a lure hooked somewhere it shouldn’t be😳
Day 8 was load up and head home day. The roof rack was slightly fuller than on the trip over but was very happy to have the extra purchase on board.
A great trip away and looking forward to returning next year. Also very much looking forward to the many adventures ahead in the new Outback! 😀😉

Thanks for reading!

Woohooo! Congratulations on your new ride!! You’ll be SO comfy now! Will you keep the blue one for skinny water’?

The dogs look incredibly comfy!

Well done on some top fish! Shame the biggie nicked your baby GG tho! Some cracker fish there.

Looking forward to your next visit to Forster .... I have some new spots to explore! You’ll need some Umpa’s tho! :gu:

Safe travels

I’ve just had issues getting onto the site too. Quite weird. iPad seems to be OK but the laptop is still weird. I’ve just closed it down and will see if it is ok now

Wow, some great looking fish there. Love the look of the new yak, as do the dogs! There is a little part of me that would love to trade in one of my yaks for an Outback I reckon! But I find it hard to part with the ones I have as they are so useful. Some nice mojo in the new yak already and the dogs look at home in it. Very cool. Glad you enjoyed the trip away!

You are kidding me...

More quality fish! And new ride!
I upgraded from my Outback (still have it) because of the seat to a PA12, and since then they have fixed that issue now and then some!
Thinking Hobie will discontinue the PA12 (been told from someone that should know).

Hope our paths will cross one day for a fish... have a look at the Midcoast Calendar and let us know if you can make one! We could learn alot from you!

Ha PF that’s a great response! I suppose the new yaks maiden voyage was pretty good...certainly came with some mojo.

I have an old PA14 with the crappy seat. Great for fishing with the dogs but just too big to cart anywhere. It literally just goes up and down the backyard in Forster to the water and nowhere else. So the Outback was a great option to cover off on all key requirements - stable and room for dogs but not too heavy and comfy as! And the reverse pedals well they are just fantastic.

I did at one point sign up to be a Midcoaster but not sure I would still be given I only ever made one outing. I’m definitely a chance for November as I normally get some leave around then but dunno how I’ll go with the others. You never know.

Certainly hope to catch up with you and others one day but I can guarantee you I won’t teach you anything that Arpie can’t teach you cos she taught me just about everything

Great read on the trip and congrats on some fabulous fish and for christening the new ride with a fine catch. I'm tempted to trade the 2015 Outback up too!

Hey Pete. I hear ya. Dusty is my second sausage. My old girl Rory went mid 2017. Still not really over losing her but Dusty helps fill the gap. They are great dogs!
