Another Morning on the Bass.

#1 Post by allane » Wed Dec 20, 2017 9:27 am

With the dreaded howling NE winds of late and dirty green ocean water, thank goodness for the tranquility of our local Bass streams.
Not an early start, arriving at chosen spot at 7.30am, I'm again greeted to the chorus of what sounds like a thousand cicadas. This time I've brought some ear plugs.
The sun is already streaming down on the water, but there is still plenty over shadow along the edges. Hopefully, Bass are waiting there, for that hapless insect to fall on the water.
The river flow is very low and numerous portages is the order of the day.
Using a Black Taylor Made surface lure, it's not long before the surface erupts and lure disappears in a mass of spray. The line comes up solid and a nice mid size Bass is in the net. A good start to the morning.

A few more casts and another spectacular surface hit, the line again comes up tight. Not as big as the first but still great to catch.

Hits were quite consistent over the next couple of hours, but slowed down around 10am. I changed lures to a small bladed soft plastic. These usually work well when the fish have shut down. I managed a few more hits and picked up some smaller fish, as I headed back downstream. With plenty of hits and eight or so fish landed, its been another pleasant morning.
Back at the launch site at midday and home for lunch. Love this Coffs Coast!

Thanks allane, that was a good read and very enticing. Looks so calm. I hope to have a stint at some bass when I head to the Sunshine Coast in a couple of weeks. Keen to see what it's all about. Might have to take a thermos to do with my doughnut, though!

Well done, Allane! Always good to hooks some natives! I must get back into them & even try to get one on fly next year!! I can't see it happening in the next week or so!! The holiday makers have been in town since last weekend (usually they arrive on Boxing Day) but with Xmas being on a Monday - they've arrived early!!

Stay safe & have a great Xmas/New Year
