Inqisitive Fingerling

Postby Haynesy » Tue Jan 03, 2012 5:23 pm

I managed to hook this fellow trolling in Tallowa Dam yesterday. Can anyone ID it? I thought it might be a river blackfish? I found something very similar in
pejar dam last year?
Due to the barbless hooks it did swim away.

First thought was a Tamar River Goby but the eye doesn't look right. Hard to tell for sure because its fins are folded and it is just a juvenile but it could be a "Haynesyie"

No problem with that one. Its a big headed gudgeon. Very common baitfish and will grow upto
about 12cm.
Revenge is a dish best served cold.
With that said I'd best let you know...

Its a Flathead Gudgeon or Large Headed Gudgeon (Philypnodon grandiceps). There is also a dwarf Flathead Gudgeon (Philypnodon maculosa) which looks very similar, they can be distinguished by size and the mouth on the dwarf extends past the eye where as the Flathead Gudgeon does not.
