what is this fish

caught a hexham newcastle

it was a bright gold colour looked like puffer fish but was a lot bigger then normal and made a weird sound when lifted out of the water ??

anybody know what it is??

Hey mate
hard to tell from the picture but it looks like a bloody big toady.. did it have two big front teeth?
Colour and descriptions sounds similar haven't seen them get that big locally but only up Coffs way.
Hopefully someone can shed a bit more light

yea Sounds about right.. usually inshore wont get bigger than a couple of inches where as sea toads can get up to the 10kg mark

Yeah looks like a toady... they do get big. I caught one on fly last year, would have been at least 50cm long, quite heavy too... I've heard they can bite thru the hook with those big fangs :lek:

def a green toad..they actually use them for chasing big marlin, the marlin get high on them and love em :re: ...Dave..

have caught these toads off moreton island around the 50cm mark, they can bite clean through stainless steel hooks..!!

Pretty sure its a Green Toad by the pic but just wondering why it was up the Hunter river in the bit of fresh that is there at the moment, they are usually only a sea going fish. Have seen these in plagues at sea off Newcastle years ago when I had a stinker.
