Actually looks more like a tassel snouted flathead to me.

wow... great colors on that fella. We get a similar looking fish up here, we call them "crocodile fish". Similar to yours but more brown color like a flathead, I've caught 2 in my time, and only know a couple of other fella's up here who have hooked one. They're supposedly not that rare but we never really hear of anyone catching them up here.

Nah I've caught Tassel Shouted Flathead. They have purple in their colouration.

That's an awesome looking flatty, can't find anything on the net even close to those colourations, there is a tiger flatty but http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/saltwater/sw-species/tiger-flathead but even it isn't close to that, I'd highly suggest sending that photo to fisheries could be looking at a new species :lek:

? eastern red scorpion fish Scorpaena jacksoniensis this is the closest I can find, it is almost certainly a scorpion fish of some description, lucky it didn't spike you

Bloody weird - and BUTT UGLY! I thought it was from overseas, til I realised that you had caught it!! There is a 'flathead' in Asia/Hong Kong too.
