Hi guys. Caught this today. Not 100% sure what it is but thinking longtom? Just the mouth isn't as big and long as Google would suggest but maybe that just comes with age? Put him back to live another day either way.

Pike! Make an excellent live bait for big jew fish!! Slimey & smelly otherwise - and can slice your line & pinch your lure! :roll:

Yeah Roberta is right it's a yellow-tailed pike, I've never tried them as live bait tho, wouldn't be a bad idea tho as I found a large portion of one in the stomach of the last decent snapper I caught :wink:

Others eat Longtoms!! I hooked a HUGE one in one of the Hobie GFs and a buddy kept it & cooked it! :beye:

That happened to a mate , AFTER he released the longtom it turned on him and latched on . And yes he needed a few stitches from memory :beye:

that fish is a "yellow tailed barracuda" aka "sea pike" Sphyraena obtusata Cuvier
they do make excellent bait grow to about 55cm

Great live bait for snapper!!. Scarby reef is full of yellow tail pike hense the present's of large numbers of snap's.

Cheers all. Good to know. What's a good way to rig them up for live bait given their length? This one was about 35cm I reckon.

use a stinger one through the shoulder and one through the tail
they don't survive long out of water
35cm is perfect bait size,
biggest I've managed is 56cm
