Fish ID: grinner/cod/blenny like thing

Postby NorthSIKer » Fri Nov 28, 2014 7:58 pm

Got a few of these around Goold Island to Cardwell the other day.

They have a single long fin on top and bottom like a blenny; upward eyes, funny grin and fine needle teeth like a grinner; and a massive mouth for their size and spots like a small cod.

The one in the photo had eggs, so I am assuming they don't grow much bigger.

They hit soft plastics just like a bommie cod. All caught in 6m-15m of water, around reefy areas.

Solved it speaking to another keen fisherman this afternoon who identified straight away from my verbal description - papuan jawfish http://australianmuseum.net.au/Papuan-Jawfish-Opistognathus-papuensis/.
