Michaels Camp site, Mangrove Ck, Ashby, near Maclean nth NSW

Well as promised from an earlier post.....

Last Saturday I went down to Michaels camp on the banks of Mangrove Ck which flows in to the back channel of the Clarence River not far from the townships of Chatsworth Island and Ashby, which are about 5 minutes north of Harwood on the Pacific Hwy.

I first met Mic last year when he was going through the development approval for the camp. He was a pretty full of beans kinda guy. He was building a trailer, that look to me like a spaceship but it was in fact the only type of toilet that council would allow. Wow he was serious about this then. Actually I got to meet him through a mate who thought I would appreciate a launch site into mangrove ck (a paddle normally down back channel of about 10km) I jumped at the chance and have fished it a few times since. I am lucky as Mics camp is less than 10 minutes from my farm.

The camp itself is well serviced with 3 tents set up for hire, complete with rudimentary kitchens. The area is mainly grassed and well protected from the weather. The launch areas are sandy and flat and the river has some brilliant fishing in it most of the year. Especially for Flathead.

When I took the pics some groups were just arriving. There were 4 separate lots of campers and all had canoes, kayaks and very small tinnies. Other times I have seen an array of wicked campers full of backpackers. Mic has set this up as an eco friendly camp.

He also tells me that the pre-christmas time is starting to fill with local groups wanting to camp and have Christmas parties. (probably a good time to avoid)

I didn't go but I have heard and seen the pictures of a great waterfall and water hole a short walk from the site. Ok enough of the talking...now for some pics.

Looks a great spot and the secret will be out now. I agree with you about the spaceship design of the loo. Must be a couple of engineers on the local council. Lets hope the camp spot attracts the right type of people and not the idiots. Gaz.

Looks a great spot. $20 per person to camp, is that indicative of the sort of cost for camping down there?
