Kayak camping Sydney

#1 Post by davington » Sat Sep 24, 2011 8:33 pm

Does anyone know of any good spots to kayak to and camp in the sydney area? My best guess would be Port hacking, stopping somewhere on the shore of the Hacking river or South West Arm creek, but im not even sure if camping is allowed there.
Any ideas are welcome, and then the next step is finding people who are interested in a kayak camping trip.

There is a small camp site in sw arm port hacking. I'm pretty sure you are meant to contact national parks if you wish to use it. Alternately there is bonnie vale which has plenty of room. Bonnie vale is located between bundeena and mainbar.
There is probably options on the hawkesbury river too.

there are a couple of good ones in marramarra national park. there are two good ones a few hundred metres apart on marramarra creek (which i have been to), and there's also one called genetleman's halt on the hawkesbury river (which i'm hoping to try in the next few weeks). these campsites can only be reached by boat (or after a long hike) and so tend to be quiet most of the time, which is great!

I don't think you could beat the Basin on Pittwater. This is across from "Summer Bay" er, Palm Beach, and there is a ferry every hour or so to the National Park camping ground at the Basin if you want to carry more gear over ..

Also on the hawksbury I've seen kayakers camping up pumpkin creek and bar island! The island is a cemetery from the early settlers and as mentioned murramurra where there is an old orchard and you can still get fruit

Berowra creek has plenty!!!
Most are on the Great North Walk track but are right on the water.
Blackash is upstream from crosslands reserve
Crosslands itself has great grass camping and car access too, good put in spot also
Calna creek has a couple of spots
And on a high tide you can reach a site in calabash bay

Paddle up the colo river from skeleton rock, plenty of spots to stop.
Any of the ski parks along the hawkesbury river.

Your first option sounds interesting though.

Narrabeen lake has a top caravan and camping park too.
Cheers Paul
Kayak fishing isn't a sport. It's much more serious than that.

Funny you say that. My 15 yr old son and I pitched a tent at the ski park just outside cattai for an overnighter with our yaks. We were the only ones there, they had a kiosk and toilets. It was $12 for the 2 of us , powered site so we had lights and the boy had his I-pad thingy and we watched a movie, loved it.
