The light river/ Trout S.A

Postby Hunter89 » Wed Aug 03, 2016 4:30 pm

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and I have been spending alot of time on the light river. Just out of kapunda s.a.
Still no fish nor visuals. I'm using hard body's on some light bream gear. Does anyone have any advice that may help me land a fish.
Locations, methods , season of year ? Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks again
Joel ..

obviously don't know the light river specifically had a look on google earth so here's some basic trout info
always work your way upsteam as the fish face into the current
trout are very flighty and aware so a stealthy approach casting upstream and working your lure back WITH THE CURRENT winding fast enough for the lure to swim (this can be quite fast)
from the bottom of the pools work your casts upstream gradually making them longer this way you can get multiple fish from one pool, generally the bigger fish sit at the top of the pools where the water flows in
trout will live in a puddle as long as it has adequate flow so cast any piece of water than can cover a fishes back
the main lures I use are shallow minnow style hardbodies either floating or sinking between 40-70mm, bladed spinners (celtas), and Halco wobblers
Rapala finesse sinking and black magic bmax are good options go for trout imitation patterns or a gold colour
early morning and late arvo are the best times

hope this helps
good luck
Dave

Thanks for the feedback. Some positive news I went for a few cast early this morning and seen a few very large jumps. Still yet too hook one. " Ahh frustrating "

Went for a flick at the same location this arvo. First time hooked up and got absolutely smoked on my 2500 Stella. 6lb braid 6lb leader , What ever it was I couldn't turn it back towards me. It ended up in some reeds up stream down deep and I had no hope of dragging it out..
What a buzz!
Any suggestions what it was?
I don't think a trout could do that much damage ?

probably a carp, could have been a massive trout but unlikely if it didn't jump

Bit of an update here, had some great hits today and lots of visuals.. hooked a 35cm hooks fell out trying to land without a net. still pumped. There was alot happening today. Given the warm weather and all the dragonfly/bug activity. The fish where on bite. A good lesson for fishing unknown waters.
