Fresh or Salt to suit??????

Postby RUG » Sat Jul 31, 2010 10:53 am

Just reading Slims "Tips for getting into Winter Snapper" thread and an interesting thought hit me.

With your wet mount sounder do you use fresh or salt water to fill the transducer cup?

I'm asking because both have different densities so if you use fresh water inside the hull wouldn't that change the readings once the beam goes through the fresh, hull and then the saltwater?

My Humminbird Sounder has "Water Type" settings(Fresh, Shaollow Salt and Deep Salt) so the company recognises there are differences.

Any thoughts on the matter?

When in the salt I use salt water in the wet mount, and fresh when in the fresh, and then just change the settings to suit.

G'day Rug,

I have a Humminbird sounder with settings for both Salt and Freshwater. To be truthful i don't know what setting it's on, I never changed it even when i had it in the Boat. I have a wet mount in my Kayak and only use freahwater to top it off regardless of whether i am in the salt or fresh.

I really don't think it makes a great deal of difference provided you know how to adjust your sounder for the conditions you encounter while fishing.

Cheers, Steve.

Biggles has it right, when in salt water use salt water, when in fresh water use fresh water, I don't know if it makes that much difference but it's no hardship to do it this way.

Hi all,

I doubt that it matters what liquid you use in your wet mount, but i found that when I set my humminbird to salt water settings, things improved quite a lot. It took me a couple of years to find out that it had been set for fresh.

Cheers all Andybear :bye: :bye:
