When will one of the major players in the sounder game develop a wireless transducer and head unit. Other technologies have gone wireless so why not a sounder?

Lowrance would have to be killing it now that they've partnered with hobie.

It would be interesting to run another poll. I reckon you'd find similar trend if you ran a concurrent poll "what brand of kayak are you in? "

That would be great, but wouldn't the transducer (like so called "wireless speakers") require power? If so then we would be ditching a wire but adding another battery.

Lowrance Elite 4 DSI. I call it the snag finder. Explains the loss of blades.
I would like to come to this but I need advanced notice of the date to clear it with work.

True that, but perhaps they can start looking into different means of battery power (similar to cordless power tools and alike). I'm sure they've looked at it, but the old SLA has to be something of the past soon with the way batteries have gotten lighter ans smaller for more punch. Before I get the travelling with a bomb comment, think about that mobile that sits on your bed-side!!!

A wireless sounder to transducer setup would be smicko. You could have the main unit with a plug in plug out water proof compartment and take the battery to a charging dock, and likewise with the transducer. The transducer would be the tricky component though given: placement (wet, thru etc) and size. I think a sepcialised through-hull would be the easiest.

Like the thought RUG.

Back on the track, LOWRANCE. Agree with Zelko, love the detail it brings back.

Lowarance for me. I switch between a Elite 4X and Elite 5 depending if I feel like looking at colour or Grey.

Great idea.
'None' for me but 'none' suffices for my needs for now.
Perhaps another post that allows people to select or input a variety of makes and models preferred and reasons why?
That might be a big ask for the technology available but I am very impressed with the idea and the results shown so far.

Yep. All good with that also. And i'd bet (if i was a gambling sort of bloke), that this above scenario, is not all that far away.
But till then, the Garmin 300C will suffice for now. (Until i can get an imaging sounder).

Cheers and tight lines,
Ian

I voted for not fishing with a sounder as I don't have a sounder, but i do plan on getting one, and hearing good things about the garmin 300c for those on a tight budget for around the $200 mark on special. When people say "if you just spent a little more you could of got ....." What would be the best unit in the next price bracket say around $250--$300 including units on special?
And what features other than a bigger screen would I be paying for?

Thanks,
Johnno

HEy Neebs.
I'm either nuttier than some or have spent too much of my wiring up home theater and car audio systems but I cut my Lowrance tranny cable and shortened it. Haven't had any problems at all.

Now there's a man who knows how to think outside of the square. Great idea Snow.
If that's being nuttier than some, then I'd like to become a life member of that group.

Lowrance Mark 4 combo mono FF/GPS (http://www.lowrance.com/en-us/Products/ ... en-us.aspx) for me. It's the runt of the litter (in both size and cost), yet so feature packed it makes some of the other offerings out there look decidedly ordinary. Despite having a mono display the resolution and grey scale count means detail is exceptional. So good I would say it's way better than many of the cheaper colour units I've seen. Even with that smaller display it runs rings around my old colour Navman.

And get this; provided you are prepared to tinker with sensitivity and a few other things (only mugs leave their sounder on auto) it's really easy to tune so you can actually see arches. Real ones. Which is I suggest something many people out there have never seen, even on their fantastic new expensive state of the art plasma screen sized HD units.

The integrated GPS is a really nice thing to have, but it's the new Lowrance Trackback feature which gets my vote for most useful feature. For the first time on an inexpensive sounder you can go back and review/mark (after that hook up or sighting of structure) spot X so you can find it again later. That's a ball tearer in my book.
Cheers Paul
Kayak fishing isn't a sport. It's much more serious than that.

Hey Occy,

Mate I had a NAVMAN finder/plotter combo many years ago as well. I needed to purchase maps on a card for it. Is it the same situation for a Lowrance Mark 4 or Elite 4?

Hate to buy one, then have to payout $$$ for maps of my local area.

Cheers!
