Sounder question ?

#1 Post by the yabby » Wed Jun 01, 2016 2:45 pm

G'day people, I've got an old lowrance sounder that I've just put power too, I've found only the top half or so of the screen is visible, apart from a thin line across base of screen, transducer is in around a 1ft of water.
It's showing a depth of 7.3ft, by running my hand through the water it is reading the changes and there seems to be movement in the thin line across base. When trying to scroll through menu only top half is visible.
On closer inspection I found 1 of the brass sockets in the cable plug is missing, could this cause the screen to only display the top half? Or do I have multiple problems.

What Jamie D said. I changed to Garmin and have been very happy. Check out the new Garmin Striker range - great units for the bux

Depends on the model. missing socket could be an unused blank.

Try deeper water, some sounders have trouble reading/displaying in less than a meter or so.

Does your fishfinder come with a demo mode? You can try that to see if the screen is stuffed. Something else is to try a different transducer. At least this way you can try to figure out which component is failing.

If you have sunk a lot of cash into the unit your best bet is probably to send it back to the dealership to see what is wrong though.

Yes has demo mode, still only displays half screen. So am guessing screen is gone to start with.
With the cable, all ports are filled with pins when connected to screen.
Had the unit sitting idle for years now, if it needs to be binned, so be it.
Thanks for the help people, cheers

Half a screen means stuffed screen, especially as it is doing it in simulator. If the unit is old, ie an x4 etc then just chucked it out. Only a one year warranty, there are still a few x4s floating around in BCF selling for sub $50 but these may be demos, which still come with a full warranty.

However your better by far going colour, whether Garmin, lowrance or humminbird. THey all have the same percentage of unit problems over a one year period, the garmin are more powerful, but equally as reliable as the lowrance, guaranteed
Kayaks are Pandoras Braclets for men.
