Braid shelf-life?

Postby RhubarbTheYeti » Thu Sep 07, 2017 6:18 pm

Does braid have a shelf-life?
I have access to the stock of a tackleshop that was closed and locked up over 10 yrs ago. Has just been sitting on the rack in original boxes ever since so not exposed to UV

hmmmm, I reckon you'll only find out when you try it!!

I am on a pretty tight budget - so probably use my braid longer than some ..... and am disappointed when braid 'breaks' unexpectedly! :(

Grab some & try it!! Let us know how it goes!

Cheers

I was of the understanding that when not used and stored well braid lasts, well a very long time. It is fairly UV resistant too.

But then I don't have any good proof of the above conjecture so maybe do some more research first.

I knew braid is worse than mono or flouro for the environment because it outlasts the other types of line by a lot but had to hunt to find the following:

For those interested, the environmental damage life of different types of line is in the following article

OK, sounds like it'll be worth a go. What shocked me was the old price tags :lek: There is obviously a bit more competition in the braid market now than back then

My memory as a Redfin-chasing kid is that my handline (wrapped a Coke bottle) had a fairly short shelf life. Mono now does seem to have a longer life but it would be good to know how the Bioline 'blurb' came up with 600 years. Irrespective, the early-days-of-braid reel of Spiderwire uncovered in my garage about five years ago still feels strong (but very stiff) and I keep saying, "must load it onto a reel one day".
Cheers,

I've had the same Platyl Milenium braid on my ABU 1500 for 15 years & it still seems OK, admittadly it hasn't had much use the past couple of years.
