Buj's kayak camping gear.

Postby Buj » Sat Jan 20, 2007 10:02 pm

Over the past few months I have been putting together some camping gear which is lightweight, compact & easily stowed on a kayak so that I can paddle to some choice camping spots, which cannot be accessed by car.

My main need was to minimize weight and storage on the kayak without compromising comfort, whilst out and about camping for a few days. All the gear can be packed into a 50lt dry bag (with clothes) and strapped to the bow of the kayak.

I thought this would be useful to post up, as a starting point, for anyone who was thinking of purchasing kayak friendly camping gear. Most of the gear was purchased from EBay (AU & US) as prices were considerably cheaper than most retailers. Although there are many different brands and quality levels of gear, here is a list of items I chose without breaking the budget.

All items fit into this 50lt dry bag which is strapped to the bow.

By using the dry bag for storage of all the camping gear it then free's up the hatches of the kayak so that I can store fishing gear, food & drinks and other miscellaneous items.

If you use a milk crate on your kayak you can empty that out and turn it upside down for a basic camp chair (an inflatable cushion would make it more comfortable). I'm going to try a few small modifications to the crate and see if I can connect my Apex 1 kayak seat to it for added back support.

Hope all the above info helps.
Regards,

Hi BBB,

The specs for the Therm-a-rest Prolite 4 sleeping mat can be found on the following site........
http://www.thermarest.com/product_detail.aspx?pID=41&cID=1

Although they have other mats that are thicker and more comfortable, the Prolite 4 is much more lighter and compact when stowed away.

Hi Jay, It's a pretty good tent this one. Fully waterproof and storm proof as well. It's classed as a 2 man tent though i'd treat it as a 1 man tent as it is pretty small. If you got 2 blokes in there then something is definately wrong

I bet you'll have a ball fishing up in the NT. I can't wait to read the trip reports  .
