Down rigger location

#1 Post by bop34 » Sun Jan 13, 2019 12:49 pm

I have made use of an old alvey reel and rod and turned it into a down rigger with 80lb coloured braid. Now that I'm fishing out of a Supalite yak I'm uncertain on the best place to mount it. I thought in front of the paddle stroke however I am not convinced that this will be ideal. I'm now thinking just behind the left trolling rod holder. Has anyone tried and tested a similar set up with down riggers ? My objective is to be able to send a lure or bait deep for trout kingies and anything in between. On the Rhs I plan to run a surface lure.

hmm a downrigger on a paddle yak. I got one on my pa14 and don't use it often, it is positioned just beside my right knee with a line from a rear rod comeing forward to the clip then lowered to depth. not sure on a super lite if you have repurposed a rod and reel it would be easy enough to put a extra rod holder in behind your self because you need the paddle stroke area free like you said. might be a trial and error till you find some where comfortable to mount it. can a parvane work or are you trying to get extra deep??

After fishing SWR with Grant I was interested in trying 3+ metres down. It will be a trial.

On my Profisha 525 I have mine mounted in the right hand rod holder just behind the seat. The downrigging rod goes in the right rear rod holder. It is easy to reach behind and wind up the bomb.
My down rigger is a converted Alvey that has a drag control and anti reverse. It can be operated with one hand.

if your just after 3 to 5 m a parvane will get you that. those white yamashita ones go the best. you can have one on a pre determined length of line (eliminating the extra rod and reel to carry) clipped to the yak and throw it over the side with a downrigger line clip on the back to release your fish fighting line. or have it riged inline, but you'll just have to handline the fish in the last bit because you wont be able to wind the parvane through the guides, trust me I have tried once by mistake

I use Scotty bases for my rod holers but this would work in the Stealth rod holders.

I like those rod holders on a stealth just for the fact they keep the reel away from the water a bit more let alone you have more adjustment in them.

Tested the setup today worked very well using the downrigger mounted in front of the hatch and the rod in the rear holder. I could see the depth of the rigger on my sounder. I need to use at least a size 20 sinker the 12 dragged to much to the rear.
