Flush Mount Rod Holder on Malibu Mini-X

Postby baitbreath » Tue Mar 21, 2017 4:27 pm

hi all,

I recently just purchased a second hand Malibu Mini-X. I havent used it yet, but cant wait.
I put my rods in the 2 rod holders behind my seat and noticed that the reel touches the Yak, which is going to scratch it over time, damage the reel and/or get a lot of unnecessary salt water on it when paddling/splashing.

I want to put a PVC insert in them to raise them up a little higher.

Can anyone please suggest how high/long they should be ?
Can anyone please recommend what i can use to soften the edge of the PVC pipe, so it dosent scratch the reel? I was thinking, gluing some sort of sponge or felt to the tips.
Any would anyone have any idea what size PVC pipe i should be buying for this Kayak?

From memory my PVC risers were made from 40mm pipe. If the tube is too large, just split it lengthwise and fold one side inside the other [that was needed on one of mine].

Been using a riser for over 10 years and had no need for for any rubber and reels show no marks on them, however the cut edges were sanded smooth inside and out on each end.

Length of riser ... mine are just measurement from reel seat to butt end + depth of the flush mount itself.

Too dark this time of night to take a photo. I'll try and post my set up tomorrow. Mine is PVC pipe with 3/4 rubber grommets, holds 3 rods and a net with no need for drilling holes in the kayak.

Cut slots along bottom edge of slightly oversized tube so that when you compress it by jamming it in it stay stuck. I cut open end of my tubes at an angle, makes the opening bigger to guide rod in. You can flare end of tubes if you like by heating with a hot air gun carefully or submerging in boiling water and pressing a glass bottle, eg wine bottle in the ends

Length can be water ever suits you

Here is my setup, it was given to me by a guy I met when camping up at Emu Park south of Yepoon.
The two side holders hold a rod and my landing net, the center upright holder can hold a Bunnings umbrella for sun protection, or if I am using a ski pole as a stake out pole for shallow water I put it in there (I drilled a hole through the bottom to allow the pole to go down in further and holed it better.

Cheers and tight lines,
Corey.
