Anyone fishing offshore around Coffs Saturday morning

#1 Post by Marty75 » Fri Feb 10, 2017 9:26 am

Apart from the heat, the conditions don't seem to be too bad tomorrow. Anyone heading out early to chase macks?

Contemplating hitting up Sawtell or possibly SWR closer to home.

Got smashed trying to launch off Sawtell (south side of island) & almost came to grief on the rocks.

Went home with my tail between my legs......

Next time!

Thanks guys, if it wasn't for the 4 surfers who paddled out to me it would have been worse.
Almost made it out but that last wave was massive & smashed me backwards.
My paddle leash broke straight away & I lost sight of my kayak. It was either heading into the rocks, the beach or out to sea. That was the last time I head out around the south side of the island.
With my PFD keeping me afloat I couldn't really make any ground as the waves pounded on top of me and the surge carried me near the rocks.
Amid the panic my heart sank when I saw the container holding my car key & mobile phone floating away (my main hatch on the Evo popped open) but thankfully one of the surfers retrieved it for me while another managed to get my kayak back in ( no idea how I didn't lose any of my gear).
They helped me back to shore and it took about half an hour for my adrenaline to subside.

Stay safe out there guys

Marty

I've had a similar experience Marty very recently to . I believe in the long run they make you a more conservative and wiser offshore yakker , I've got no dramas now scrapping a launch altogether or moving it to an easier location , good experiences ultimately is what I'm saying

Tight lines brother

Cheers Jamie, 1st mod I'll be doing next is the paddle leash pulley system like yours.
I think had I been able to stay with the kayak I would have been better off.

Mate , the amount of times that leash system has saved me a long hard swim I could not count on three sets of hands . The reason it works so well is you've got basically a two stage shock absorber , the paddle to the trolley stretches and the trolley itself stretches , will flex out to about 5-7m very handy in big swell .

Cheers Marty

Silly me never factored king tides/full moon into the equation when contemplating beach launches... With the rising tide lapping at the base of the Sawtell ramp it was bloody stupid of me to attempt to go out. Lesson learned.

On another note, after stripping down my reels to clean them I found that my new Fin Nor Lethal 80 had almost no water inside it after spending roughly 15 mins submerged in the rough swell and Stealth hatch which was full of water.

Thumbs up!

Marty
