Anyone fishing this arvo or tomorrow morning?

Postby WayneD » Wed Apr 19, 2017 11:25 am

I find myself in Townsville. Tried land base last night and this morning for no luck so if anyone is heading out and has a spare seat/kayak then I am happy to tag along. Otherwise I will just keep throwing a lure in wherever I can. Seems to be plenty of accesible water landbased around here. So far i have tried the rock walls near the Casino and a few bridges in Ross Creek where I got a decent hit.

Hi WayneD - I hope you are enjoying Townsville!

I'm heading out early tomorrow - probably over to Bay Rock / West Point / Flats where hopefully there will be enough protection from the winds for a bit of a fish.

Forecast is up to 20 knots and the little, short period waves stand up in the bay and can be quite tough. Happy for you to tag along however I do not recommend it unless you are experienced on the ocean in sloppy conditions. Also looking at 20km to 30km round trip.

My extra kayak is a Kaskazi Skua with a single rod holder fitted. This is a 58cm fibreglass sit on top based on a sea kayak hull. So a bit narrower than a Stealth Profisha.

Let me know if you are keen.

Sorry mate got super busy at work and was ready to crash by the time I got back to the motel room. Managed a small Barra out of the lakes near my motel this morning so I was happy with that. I don't think I could stay upright in a 58cm wide yak anyway

Back up here from the 10-12th May so I will give a bit more notice next time. Hopefully this wind will have buggered off by then.

Nice work on the barra.

Yeah, you didn't miss much. The water was stirred up and dirty all the way to the island and still not blue around West Point.

And the wind stayed more southerly than expected (almost offshore). My usual plan is to come back inside the island (protected from the winds) almost to middle reef and paddle straight across with the aid of a quartering to following sea on the usual more easterly breeze. But today pretty much had to paddle straight into 15kt+, gusting 20kt+ (according to the AIMS buoy) from West Point to Palleranda which was slow and tedious. Although the waves weren't too bad (shorter fetch coming from the south) it was definitely not a day to be testing out a narrower kayak for the first time.

25km all up but fishing conditions were terrible, didn't put the lures in much of the time and only trolled. Managed one shark and another good hit that didn't connect and that was it. Not much on the sounder either. Saw the usual turtles and also some dolphins.

Post up when you are next up and see who is about - not sure what I will be doing.
