New Kayak Camping kit
Now that I am expecting a new AI I was thinking about purchasing a new tent and shelter. I'm looking at MSR Hubba Hubba and a MSR Zing. Anyone have any experience with either of them?
Cheers, XD.

Re: New Kayak Camping kit
The Hubba Hubba is brilliant' , used one for years hiking in the backcountry of NZ. When not in use store it outside of the carry bag with plenty of ventilation around it. I drape mine over a hanger rail. The only downside of these tents is the waterproofing can break down if kept in the bag for long periods in humid environments. Apart from that they are very light very quick to erect, great insect protection and can be used without the fly on clear warm nights. Perfect for taking on a kayak camping trip

Still got one Wayne, one of the old green ones and the new cam one too. Mozzie net has a few holes in it tho.

Re: New Kayak Camping kit
Hey XDCammer, the Hubba Hubba and Zing are very different concepts - first is a freestanding meshed tent, the other is a tarp.
Both the MSRs are pretty good for what they are, but there is a heap of choice in good tents available and depending on what you want to achieve many may be better suited.
Maybe if you can list some of your priorities from the tent (e.g. liveability, rough weather performance, weight, snow performance, packed size, ease of set-up, durability, performance in heat, size of footprint, etc) and/or likely camping locations that could help to suggest some options?

Re: New Kayak Camping kit
Thanks guys, NorthSIKer, I was after something 1.weather proof 2.light 3.small packed 4. liveability (room). As it's a 3 season tent I'm not too worried about snow etc. The application would be for 1 or 2 day stops in camp grounds and kayak camping. The Hubba Hubba also has material walls that go higher than some others so in a beach environment sand won't get blown inside the tent from the sides. The Black Wolf Turbo Tent is great but too big for short stays.
The Zing I was going to use as a tarp for cooking and just lazing around. I know it's an expensive option, but, It's easy and fast to put up and covers a large footprint.
Cheers, XD

This is the system I am thinking about, This is not the Hubba Hubba tent though.
Light, easy, pack away quickly, and waterproof.

Maybe have a look at Tarptent http://www.tarptent.com/index.html. These are very light and not too expensive. They are made of silnylon - as Kingy pointed out the urethane coated fabrics most tents use don't have the longest life (especially if stored a bit wet or humid). As well as the fabric lasting longer small holes and tears in silnylon can also be fixed by just dabbing on a bit of selleys 100% all clear silicone. However silnylon does contract and expand more due to moisture and temperature so takes a bit more tweaking to keep a nice taught pitch.XDCammer wrote:Thanks guys, Northskier, I was after something 1.weather proof 2.light 3.small packed 4. liveability (room). There is also an Australian agent for Tarptent - i am sure if you search google they can be found.
As for the tarp, the MSR would be solid but there are also a heap of good cottage manufacturers (mostly in the USA) that are very good. In Australian Terra Rosa Gear is worth a try and can custom make you a tarp if desired http://www.terrarosagear.com/tarpshelters.htm

Re: New Kayak Camping kit
Checkout the new Ray's Outdoor catalogue. This one is a carbon copy of my Salewa tent. Mine ends up 400m x 250mm in a bag, incredibly lite.
