Sleeve for Sun Protection

#1 Post by Dodge » Thu Mar 10, 2016 8:48 am

Like most yakkers keep covered up a lot when on the yak having had some sun lesions excised over the years.

Some years ago via a link on the forum I started wearing UV Cool Leggings that are rolled on/off below shorts found them good and effective.

Recently most of my fishing shirts are wearing out so need substituting for new gear, but in the closet still have a number of work shirts in good knick I wear when cycling.

Having seen other cyclists and golfers wearing UV arm protection sleeves decided they might be good to wear with a work shirt, had a look on ebay and they are cheap, and ordered some white ones for coolness.

Arrived in time to wear for the morning at GCNR outing on Hinze Dam, the picture shows one on arm and the other holding the loose sleeve.

On the arm initially they feel slightly firm, but after a while it is not noticed and no restriction in using the arms for any purpose, and certainly was good in the sun, back on shore they peeled of in seconds as do the leggings.

If leggings, or arm sleeves get hot, roll to wrist or ankle and dip in the water, then pull them back up, instant cooling.

Worth a look if you do not want the full lycra sun suit many prefer

Hey Dodge, they look like they may be good for me too with my fair skin. I found the head sock too hot but arms and legs could be the go. I think I can see more advantages than disadvantages. So you got them on ebay. I'll take a look right now. Regards Bill

Bill the leggings have been treated harshly over the years with only one small hole big as a match head.

First use of the arm sleeves also looks good, being skin tight nothing snags or catches and should be good when using a fly rod.

Being lycra they dry in a few minutes after being soaked in water.

I wear long fishing pants when kayaking and I found the long pants left an area uncovered as the long fishing pants would ride up a little bit. So my ankles to my lower shin was exposed as I peddled my hobie.

I now use the arm sleeves for to cover from my ankles to lower shin area. They are brilliant. So light and flexible .... And cheap ;)

:idiot:

After suffering a melanoma to my left arm in 2011, I leave as little skin exposed to the sun as I can these days...

So good sun wise hints Dodge.... And thanks.

Might have to look into those leggings. I always wear a long sleeve shirt out fishing.

The legging to me look like a good idea.
Being 6'2" and 76 kg I have been told I have lucky legs - lucky they don't snap off and stick up my bum. :blah:
Where are you guys buying the leggings from?
Cheers

Great suggestion there Dodge.

Excellent way to modify your favourite shorts or short sleeve shirts for kayaking and fishing.

Personally, I like loose clothing for fishing and kayaking in general.
Unfortunately both of those products you refer to look quite tight against the skin.
Okay if you are a bike rider though.

I have a favourite pair of loose fitting micro fibre long pants I bought from BCF. They zip off at the knees and work a treat for my needs.
They are also loose enough to roll up which is ideal for a quick and easy solution at the launch areas I use.

Even if they get wet they dry out very quickly.
I mainly use the zip of leg feature when getting into the car if my lower pants legs are wet.

As for long sleeves, I wear them all the time with loose fitting long sleeve microfibre shirts.
Having had skin cancer removed several times, short sleeves or bare legs aren't a sensible option for me on the water.

Your suggestions will provide some workable solutions and alternatives for many others here I'm sure.
Cheers -- Paul
