Why I went missing

#1 Post by tonystott » Thu Dec 21, 2017 2:18 pm

Maybe nobody noticed, but I have not been in KFDU for ages.

2017 saw me have five spine operations, where half of my vertabrae are now fused together (for those interested, C1-C4 joined in my neck, and T10-T12, L1-L5 and S1 also joined together with two 1/4 inch vertical rods). Total medical bills were around $400k (WTF?) of which about $180k were for titanium parts.... incredibly, several parts cost $8,400 EACH, which seems hard to understand. I have had five trips in the Air Ambulance between Taree and Mascot (in a Beechcraft twin turbo King Air worth about $10M, but charged out at normal road ambulance fee)

I can now finally stand up straight (but not so good at bending LOL) and no longer need to take morphine painkillers every day, but I am slowly building back my strength after four months in hospital wasted my muscles away. It took me a while to work out how to get into and out of my car, for a while I was thinking jaws of life might be necessary :)

I hope to be strong enough to finally take my TI out early next year.

Goodness me!

I never realised how expensive this sort of thing can be. I suppose the main thing is that you are getting mobile again, though obviously not without pain.

Hope you and your family have a great Christmas, and all the best for the new year....

I know a few people in a similar position to you with multiple spinal surgeries in a short period. Such a bloody tough road but great to hear you're on the mend. I hope the healing continues and you can get some time on the water soon.

All the best for a healthy and strong 2018!

See

You haven’t changed and as you can see I haven’t as well.

That defamation line that you used a while ago ( thanks for the laughs on that one btw) still I see remembered.

Some just scroll on right.

Anyway, hope you are on the mend...but who gives a rats about the big numbers ....ohhhh that’s right...Tony.

Seriously hope you are Ok.

PS ( most people call me clitoris as I’m not 100% a complete one...well to most)

Nothing worse than pain in the back. I have a stuffed back also. Similar regions, the C's, T's and L's and some fractured vertebrae and arthritic degeneration for good measure. Kept me out of my canoe for 2 years once. Stinging nettles saved me. I whipped my back with stinging nettles up to 10 times a day and it felt great especially when I was in most pain and cramped up, allowed me to bend again and get out fishing. No cost or side effects except for the rash and itch. I know this sounds weird but works like magic. I don't take my kayak out for long trips as the seating position with legs straight out in front does not help. I made a seat on the thwarts of the canoe so I can sit with knees below the waist, this really helps also. ALSo started using a trailer to reduce lifting, I can slide the boats up onto it. Good luck mate hope you get back out there painless.

Wow! I reckon my surgeries were preferable to flogging myself with nettles1

like me , a number of members have been quiet . Thought that life got in the way of reporting anything .
Just by the way my wife had t1 to l2 fused with 2 titanium rods . All I can say is do the exercises , watch your weight and you will never look back .
good luck with the recovery journey.
