Shark got away
Went out the entrance of Lake Illawarra & sat about 150 metres off Windang beach when I got a huge bite from a shark. But it got off. I think it was a Bull Shark.

I wasn't fishing.I was surfing. Sitting on my board. Didn't see any fish. But there would have been a few out there.

Re: Shark got away
pleased to see you are getting good medical treatment, that looks a rather serious injury. hope it won't keep you off the water for too long. Take care.

Wow! That's pretty intense! Hope the healing goes well. Pity you didn't have it on camera, you could have paid for some of the recovery with the revenue!
Glad you're doing ok thus far!

Re: Shark got away
Thanks guys.
The safety reasons for us kayakers can be similar as a surfers when it comes to dangling our legs overboard.
I was just sitting there nice & quiet whilst waiting for a wave when the shark hit.
These types of sharks, especially the bull shark can go into our estuaries where we would be more inclined to dangle our legs.
I have always cringed at sea going kayakers doing the same.
So stay safe & think twice. Especially in known shark waters.
It only has to happen once.
Cheers.

Re: Shark got away
Bloody hell. Unlucky but very lucky as well mate.
If you don't mind sharing, how was the pain during the attack? From other reports I've read, the people who were bitten (and survived....) didn't feel much pain during the attack.
Very eerie!
Wishing you a full recovery mate.
Marty

Re: Shark got away
Flattyakker: I think the op went well. All tendons & nerves repaired. Healing going well. And have had a new fibre cast put on. Still have to wait for a few weeks for the cast to be removed for rehab. I have got movement & blood circulation in all toes. So far so good.
Pommy Nigel: Thanks mate. Great to hear you are still on board the KFDU.
Marty75: I was lucky I didn't feel much pain. So I could wrap the leg rope straps around it.
Like you I always wondered about the level of pain too. But I think it depends on where & how one is bitten. Even up until now. Not a high level of pain. Although I was given some high pain relief in hospital just in case.
