Minnamurra to Catch my Feed

#1 Post by Freewily » Wed Jul 22, 2015 9:44 pm

Hadn't had a feed of fresh fish in ages. Surfing too much!
So got the chance today to get to one of my local rivers, Minnamurra.
Conditions were great.
As usual I start my session Fly fishing & only got one good hit & lost it! :grr:
Then used one of my pink yabby jigs for a Flatty at 37cm. Rare catch in Winter down here. :?:
Things stayed quiet so decided to anchor for lunch & fish with Helga. (Helgas Bread),
Wasn't too long before the fish came for lunch too. Got a nice bream at 37cm, a mullet at 34cm, a luderick at 28cm & a Trevally at 38cm.
Ended up with a feed of 9 in total.

A friends dad uses bread for bream, he also does quite well. The trick is keeping the bread on the hook.
Well done!

A nice mixed bag there Wily. Good to see your still out and about. Need to give surfing a break for a while so those sharks go back to eating there natural food. Some great fishing around the Illawarra. Thanks for sharing......Allan

Good mixed bag. The blackfish looks a lot bigger than 28

Good pics

How do you keep the bread on the hook

Nice haul Wil.

Funny how we all overlook the blinding obvious ref bread. Couple of old Breamers I have met over the years swear by the stuff too.

My trick with bread is to add some flour and water to it to make a thick dough that you can shape around the hook and shank. Stays on reasonably well and bream, mullet and ludurick seem to swallow it as opposed to nibbling. Burley with a ball of wet bread seems to do the trick too.

Haha! I've had the opposite. I've only been surfing a few times in the last couple of years since I got back into fishing and bought a kayak.

Great outing, with a great feed, that'll certainly be a real mixed fishermans basket. Nice work.

Cheers

Thanks guys!
Agree Mick, The softer the bread without it falling apart from the hook has caught me the most fish. That is, I wet my hands in the water before picking off the bread from the slice then squeezing & moulding it between my fingers before putting the ball onto the hook. I think the fish can feel the softness. If soft they will swallow it. If hard they will suck it in & blow it out.
And if possible dont use a sinker as the bread will come off the hook from the force of the sinker hitting & sinking in the water as opposed to a light sinker free landing & a natural sinking presentation. Wish I knew this as a kid. :idiot:

Nice bag of fish, I have found it very entertaining to use a black fish set up. Split shots, no running sinkers and the smallest circle hook. It' works a treat with the bread, and easy to release the small ones as they always lip hook them selves. Thanks for the post.
