A great few hours "Up the Creek"

#1 Post by hillbilly » Fri Mar 22, 2019 4:20 pm

I tied six new flies a couple of days ago and yesterday I managed one Flathead, a Trevally and twelve Bream. The Trevally gave me another new species on fly bringing my species total on fly to thirteen. Most fish were undersized and my target species (whiting) eluded me despite a fast strip targeting them. I caught eleven fish wading over a water covered sandbank and another three from the kayak on the way back. Kept two legal sized fish for a feed.

I love this kayak. Bought my first one in the early seventies (a Roscoe Tourer with no keel) and this one in 2005.

The fly that did the most damage.

All fish caught with a slow strip and a pause. Most fish caught on the pause.

Very cool Bill! Good reward on your own flies. Yet to venture down that slippery slope, but some day I will.

Thanks. I must admit that I was a bit skeptical about the bright green too but I had seen a fly popper with the same tail on the net in a Whiting photo so made a similar fly but without the foam. The bead chain eyes instead balanced the fly perfectly for a slow horizontal journey to the bottom on the pause. Unfortunately the size of the fish I am catching at the moment aren't a patch on your fish (Adds22, Arpie and Rory222's) last posts but I am loving the experience, particularly trying different casts etc. Regards Bill

Almost the pinnacle of fishing, catching fish on your own creations, and on fly too. Great work!
