Hi all hope this is in the right area.
Starting a new hobby. I have just purchased a second hand fly tying vice and never seen a fly being tied in real life.
What are the basic tools I will need?
What is the easiest fly to tie and the materials I will need?
This will allow me to do some research on the net before I pick up the vice on Monday.
Thanks all.

Hi ya
There is a wealth of material on the Web re Fly Tying - google is your friend
This site sets out the basics that you will need to get started. As you decide to do 'specific flies' you may need to buy some more specific product.
http://www.hookhack.com/html/flytying101.html
There are some top Fly Fishing shops in Canberra ..... go & peruse what they have - they would probably have a 'beginners' kit available to buy
If doing Salt water flies - don't use Fresh Water hooks - they will rust.
Have a chat with Freewilly - he is a prolific fly tyer!
cheers
Roberta

Re: Fly Tying - Start of a new hobby
Man! I just replied in detail & lost everything.
Very sorry for the late reply.
Basic tools are Very sharp small scissors, thread holder (bobbin), Bodkin & hackle pliers. And small pliers to cut wire.
Then basic natural colour threads, furs & feathers & beads for making fly bodies.
Then fly varnish or nail varnish. Clear is a must. You can use colours later. This helps to seal your thread after tying to stop it undoing or perishing & adds to shine.
And that is it!
Keep it simple & non expensive to start. I started catching flatehead with just red artificial fur tied to a hook.
Then added to this creation with white hair & eyes to increase my catch rate.
Just check this link to help explaining.http://www.hooked-on-flies.com/fly_tying_tools.htm
