Does anyone tow their kayak behind a bike

#1 Post by SaltyGreek » Mon Dec 16, 2019 4:35 pm

Hey everyone

I have recently had the idea to tow my kayak behind my bike to and from the water. I’m planning to do this when I’m not able to go out on the boat with my dad as I’m only 15 and cannot drive. I am in the process of making a tow bar thing to tow the kayak with. Just wondering if anybody else has done this and what they use to tow their kayaks.

Haven't done anything like this, but it's a good idea. Have seen it done a long time ago. Good luck with it.

Can’t see why you couldn’t use a bike...wouldn’t want to be too hilly tho

Good luck!

I haven't done it but did experience a wheel drop off the axle while walking (Hobie beach wheels). Same side, three times! There was no damage but the extra speed behind a bike may cause a problem if a wheel drops off. So, make sure your cart wheels lock on well and are secure.
Cheers,

Its been done often. I've seen a couple young blokes towing their yaks to the launch point. They made a cradle and used small bike wheels and made it look easy so go for it.

Have seen a few set up on other sites. Tow hitch is best mounted to the seat.
Would use a cradle as mentioned above. A scupper cart may end up with cracks in the hull.
