Jerrara dam no longer

#1 Post by Gazzaguru » Tue Sep 11, 2012 12:46 am

One of the best known secret dams in NSW has just been emptied and probably why Minnamurra river fished ordinary in winter. This dam was deemed unsafe as it nearly flooded parts of Jamberoo last year so its now been fully drained as its no longer used for anything. Up until 10 years ago, it was stocked with bass and I would have liked to know how much dead fish they pulled out and the size. I reckon there were some monsters in there. I got broken off quite a lot and I only bank bashed it twice. I think Brez and Rug got kayaks in there a few times but must of been hard work getting through the jungle. Gaz.

Did they pump it out Gaz or just open the release valve at the bottom?

Now that it's gone  I spose I can talk openly about Brez and I fishing it. Gaz we'd just park outside the gate early in the morning, drag our Hobies down the road then up through a gate and down a Horse paddock. That put us on the southern shore line looking at the Dam wall. It was quite easy really but we kept that secret to ourselves.

We had some good sessions and some Donuts. Best I got was a 39 f/l Bass(which was my first ever  ) and the best I saw from Brez was 42 f/l although he did tell me he was dragged around for 15min on a solo trip before the fish spat the lure.

I'll have wait for the bottom to dry out a bit and go look for some lures I lost. :tong:

There was a photo in the paper of the dam floor. All the mud had dried up and cracks everywhere. I think the local pony club is going to develop it as an arena. It definately won't hold water anymore. It was originally built as a back up water supply for Kiama but has not been used for a lot of years. No mention of the article about any fish. It was popular many years ago as a picnic spot. A lot of locals who live in a 15km radius never ever knew there was a dam there. Gaz

Youre right gaz it was one of the best kept secrets . funniest thing was if you looked for it on google earth it was under a cloud so you couldnt find it  yep Rug and i did have some fun in there amongst the donuts :gu: i imagine the club repsonsible for stocking it along with fisheries would have caught as many bass as they could as it was draining and maybe relocated them to fitzroy :?:

Now that i think about it i dont think i fished it since the first lot of floods we had to break the drought :beye:

It's got no water. I have not seen it for myself I was told the water has been drained. It's a real shame as we just got the place sussed.

Rang DPI and all the stocking in that article has already taken place. I have asked the question on their Twitter about it being drained

I spoke to a local about the dam on the weekend. There is a crack in the dam wall so I,m not sure whether it will be repaired or not. I drove out there and there is still some water in the middle but not much. Gaz.

I heard a while ago that they couldn't afford the ongoing maintenance of the dam and will be bringing the place back to its original state. So I would say that would mean demolishing the wall. Let's see? :?:
YAK P.B. Salmon 60cm, Flathead 60cm, Trevally 42cm, Carp 38cm, Bream 40cm, Luderick 42cm, Tarwhine 30cm,

Anymore news on this dam, I used to catch quite a few bass in there a few years ago. I nicknamed it black snake dam, I have never seen more red bellied black snakes anywhere than there. Bass were the strongest fighters I have come across also.

The radio just said this dam is overflowing and the local area down stream may be evacuated so looks like the dam wall is still there
so why bother draining it :beye:
