trout session this evening

#1 Post by upto_no_good » Sun Jan 25, 2015 11:01 am

Anybody keen for a trout fish this evening I'm heading up to lake Wallace near Lithgow for an evening session. If your keen head on up I'll be launching probably around 5pm from the main reserve just past the primary school.

Went for the drive upto Lithgow yesterday and got to lake Wallace just after 5. What greeted me was a green looking POS bit of water. Massive algal bloom going on. Not good. So have a quick look for some bait and then headed over to Lyell. Lyell was looking very nice. Water level right up near top level. Only problem was the million and one other people that think so too. I didn't even take the yak off just tossed the yabbies and mudeyes in an went home.

I got in excess of 60 mudeyes both couta and spiders and half a dozen yabbies as well as several gudgens about 8-10 cm which are also an excellent slow trolled dead bait on a 1/4 oz jig head.
So at least I know there is plenty of bait next time I go up there.

I would've just launched mate, can't hurt getting in. There was a million and one people at lake Illawarra too on the weekend, so I went scouting, took a light rod and handful of lures with my wading bag, found some awesome spots to go back to at a later date.

Also find if you get out away from the crowds... You find awesome bait grounds, like on the weekend, I found billions of soldier crabs.

Still would be fair gutted to drive that far for nothing, hopefully next time mate

I wonder how much of the issue is due lack of water movement since the power station shut down. Kind of sad as its one of the places I grew up fishing in. Caught rainbows up to 12lb in there and the odd brook trout from the feeder creek.

Most of the boats on Lyell were ski boats and I know what its like in my yak around them and its still OK but uncomfortable. But I just didn't want the hassle even in the farmers arm they were skiing in the 8knot zone. So I just had a fun drive back down the bells line rd.
The fish in Wallace are incredibly well built and fight like hell. But I've not had much success when the algae is blooming.
